First, identify the exact light
Airbag, SRS, passenger-airbag status, and seat-belt reminder indicators do not all mean the same thing. A passenger-airbag OFF light can be a normal occupant-classification result in some conditions; an SRS warning that stays on, fails to appear during its startup check, flashes, or comes on while driving can indicate a malfunction. Read the exact label and the owner's manual for that vehicle.
Do not cover the light, remove a fuse, disconnect the battery, or assume the seat belts make the warning irrelevant. Air bags are supplemental protection designed to work with seat belts, and some SRS systems also monitor seat-belt pretensioners and occupant-classification components.
If the vehicle was recently in a crash, an airbag deployed, interior restraint parts are damaged, or a passenger-airbag indicator does not match the seating condition, stop guessing. Follow the manufacturer's guidance and obtain qualified help before relying on the affected seating position.
What the warning proves—and what it does not
The observed fact is narrow: the restraint controller or warning circuit reported a state that requires attention. The lamp alone does not identify a failed airbag, crash sensor, clock spring, buckle, pretensioner, occupant sensor, connector, wiring path, power supply, or controller.
Several of those paths may be plausible on a particular vehicle, especially after collision work, seat removal, interior work, water intrusion, or a low-voltage event. None should be promoted to a diagnosis without the exact fault record, service information, and physical testing.
Do not test an airbag by disturbing connectors, probing inflator circuits, or commanding deployment-related functions. Supplemental-restraint work has exact handling, disarming, waiting, measurement, and replacement procedures that belong to current manufacturer information and qualified personnel.

Why a regular OBD-II scan may show nothing
Generic OBD-II is built around standardized emissions and powertrain evidence. The supplemental restraint controller is normally a manufacturer-controlled module, so a generic engine scan can return zero codes while the SRS module retains its own fault record.
Only call SRS checked when a compatible tool completed a read from the exact restraint module for the exact vehicle and preserved the module identity, operation, profile, adapter, and time. Reading ABS, stability control, or the engine does not prove the airbag module was contacted.
An exact SRS read that returns no fault codes is still only a module-scoped result. It is not a crash-safety inspection, does not verify every inflator or seat belt, and does not override a warning light or the owner's manual.
Preserve the evidence before service
While safely parked, record the exact light, whether it appeared during startup or while driving, mileage, recent collision or interior work, seat or connector work, battery events, water exposure, and any passenger-airbag status message. Do not place a passenger in a seat the manual says not to use.
Do not clear codes merely to make the lamp disappear. Clearing changes controller memory and can remove timing or status evidence without repairing the cause or proving the restraint system is available.
If an exact read is supported, save every returned code with its status and reporting module. If access is unsupported, gateway-locked, incomplete, or failed, retain that status. Never turn no response into no problem.
Use the exact repair path
Use current service information for the exact year, model, market, restraint configuration, and fault. A qualified repairer may need module data, connector and harness inspection, approved test equipment, collision-repair records, part provenance, and manufacturer procedures before deciding what failed.
Check the VIN in NHTSA's recall database as a separate step. An open airbag recall can identify an official remedy, but a recall lookup does not diagnose the warning on the vehicle in front of you. Used vehicles also deserve scrutiny for prior deployment and replacement-part history.
After repair, require the manufacturer-defined verification: a completed light check, an exact follow-up module read, and any qualified inspection or calibration the procedure calls for. A dark lamp by itself is not proof that every restraint will perform in a crash.
Can I drive with the airbag light on?
No universal safe-driving answer applies to every vehicle or fault. The warning can mean some restraint protection may be unavailable. Follow the exact owner's-manual instruction, avoid relying on an affected seating position, and arrange prompt qualified inspection.
Will a regular OBD-II scanner read airbag codes?
