These Terms of Use govern the ScanWrench iOS app, scanwrench.com, account and cloud features, educational material, compatibility contributions, and related services. Joshua Black is the founder and publisher responsible for operating ScanWrench (“ScanWrench,” “we,” “us,” or “our”). By using ScanWrench, you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, do not use the service.
Eligibility and authority
You must have the legal capacity to accept these terms. If you use ScanWrench for a business, shop, fleet, rental operation, or other organization, you represent that you have authority to bind that organization. You may connect to, inspect, or submit information about a vehicle only when you own it or have the owner's lawful permission.
Product scope
ScanWrench is an evidence, education, and diagnostic-workflow product. Available data and functions depend on the exact vehicle, module, adapter, firmware, operating system, manufacturer information, network path, subscription, and lawful access. A successful connection or generic emissions scan does not establish all-module access, bidirectional control, coding, programming, key service, or universal vehicle coverage.
Compatibility labels describe the exact configuration and function supported by the evidence shown. They are not a manufacturer endorsement, dealer certification, inspection certificate, warranty determination, or promise that a different vehicle or configuration will behave the same way.
EV Flight Recorder and closed pilot
The EV Flight Recorder is an owner-authorized, read-only evidence workflow. Availability depends on the exact provider, account, vehicle, firmware, market, authorization, deployment, and billing state. Applying to a pilot does not guarantee selection, connect a vehicle, start telemetry, establish compatibility, or create a paid entitlement.
You must use your own provider sign-in and must not give ScanWrench a Tesla or other vehicle-provider password, one-time code, identity document, or payment credential. You may revoke provider authority or stop a recording through the available controls. A provider may separately retain authorization, security, vehicle, billing, or request records under its own terms.
EV passports and comparisons describe returned and derived evidence from bounded observation windows. A changed charging, range-estimate, electrical, temperature, or energy value does not establish improvement, degradation, defect, repair success, cause, battery state of health, remaining life, safety, warranty eligibility, or manufacturer approval.
Diagnostic aid—not a substitute for judgment
Vehicle data can be incomplete, delayed, incorrectly scaled, manufacturer-specific, or affected by hardware and connection quality. A DTC, score, generated explanation, suggested test, or part reference is not proof that a component failed, that a repair is authorized, or that a vehicle is safe to drive, buy, rent, charge, tow, or return to service.
Use current manufacturer information and qualified professional judgment. Stop and obtain appropriate help for smoke, fire, fuel odor, overheating, severe drivability problems, braking or steering faults, restraint-system concerns, damaged high-voltage equipment, or any condition that may be unsafe.
Safety and acceptable use
- Do not operate ScanWrench or a handheld device while driving.
- Use only lawful, compatible, safely installed equipment and follow vehicle and equipment procedures.
- Do not clear evidence, reset monitors, or alter vehicle state to conceal a condition, defeat an inspection, mislead a buyer or renter, or violate law.
- Do not attempt unauthorized access, security-gateway bypass, immobilizer defeat, odometer manipulation, emissions tampering, or theft-related activity.
- Do not use the service to harm a person, vehicle, network, account, or third-party system, or to distribute malware or unlawfully obtained data.
- Do not represent a ScanWrench report as a certified inspection, guaranteed diagnosis, appraisal, or manufacturer-authorized record.
ScanWrench does not execute all-keys-lost, key-programming, or immobilizer functions. A referral, preflight packet, or expert handoff does not grant authority to perform security work.
Your storage choice and account
Where the app offers it, you may use device-only storage, create a ScanWrench account for eligible cloud features, or choose a save-nothing session. The selected mode does not change the vehicle's own storage or records maintained by Apple, hardware vendors, or services you separately use.
You are responsible for accurate account information, protecting your sign-in method and device, and activity performed through your account. Tell us promptly if you believe access is compromised. You may not sell, rent, or transfer an account or paid entitlement. Deleting a ScanWrench account does not automatically cancel an App Store subscription.
Subscriptions and App Store billing
Paid plans may include monthly or annual auto-renewing subscriptions and a one-time Founders Lifetime product. Before purchase, the App Store shows the current price, currency, billing period, included access, and any introductory offer. Apple processes payment, renewal, cancellation, tax, refund, and receipt records under your Apple account and Apple's applicable terms.
- Monthly and annual subscriptions renew automatically unless you cancel them through your App Store subscription settings before renewal.
- Cancellation stops a future renewal; access ordinarily continues through the paid period shown by Apple.
- Use Restore Purchases in the app to ask Apple and ScanWrench's entitlement provider to restore an eligible purchase. Restoration requires the Apple account associated with the purchase and is subject to Apple's records.
- Refund requests for App Store purchases are handled by Apple. A refund, chargeback, revoked transaction, or billing failure may remove the related entitlement.
- Price or plan changes apply as disclosed through the App Store and subject to applicable notice and consent requirements. Consumer rights that cannot lawfully be waived remain unaffected.
Founders Lifetime
When offered, Founders Lifetime is a one-time, non-transferable in-app purchase that provides the ScanWrench entitlement identified on the App Store purchase screen for the commercial lifetime of that ScanWrench service. “Lifetime” refers to the period during which ScanWrench continues to operate and support that service—not the purchaser's lifetime, the life of a vehicle, or permanent operation of every feature.
Founders Lifetime does not include every future product, professional shop service, paid third-party data source, OEM subscription, secure-gateway charge, hardware purchase, remote-expert fee, repair, or feature that the purchase screen excludes. It does not guarantee compatibility with every vehicle or prevent changes reasonably required for safety, law, platform rules, security, or technical viability. If mandatory law gives you additional rights, those rights control.
User content and evidence contributions
You retain ownership of notes, records, photos, compatibility observations, profile material, and other content you submit. You grant ScanWrench a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to host, copy, secure, analyze, format, and display that content only as reasonably necessary to provide the feature you requested, review integrity and safety, operate the compatibility network, respond to support, and improve the service.
You must have the right to submit the content. Do not upload another person's confidential information, full VIN in an unrestricted text field, faces or license plates you do not need, copyrighted service information you lack permission to share, access credentials, security codes, or unlawfully obtained vehicle data. Public or community submission flows will identify what is published before you submit it. Evidence may be rejected, de-identified, labeled inconclusive, or removed when it is unsafe, inaccurate, unverifiable, unlawful, duplicated, or outside scope.
Diagnostic Coach, scores, parts, and marketplace information
Generated coaching, possible causes, repair paths, Lemon Tracker indicators, ReturnProof comparisons, and similar outputs are decision aids. They can miss facts and do not establish causation, fault, abuse, legal lemon status, value, safety, warranty coverage, or entitlement to a repair or refund.
Parts workflows use exact identity evidence such as manufacturer number, suffix, position, application, and known supersession before comparing listings. Catalogs, marketplace listings, seller claims, fitment, inventory, condition, authenticity, shipping, taxes, warranties, and prices can still be wrong or change. Verify the received item and current manufacturer supersession before installation. ScanWrench is not the seller, repairer, dealer, or payment processor for a third-party purchase unless a transaction expressly says otherwise.
Third-party products and services
ScanWrench may interoperate with Apple, RevenueCat, Supabase, Google, vehicle-data agencies, adapter vendors, marketplaces, repair information, experts, and other independent services. Their products, availability, accounts, licenses, privacy practices, and terms are their responsibility. References to vehicles, adapters, manufacturers, retailers, standards, or trademarks are descriptive and do not imply endorsement, sponsorship, certification, or affiliation.
License and intellectual property
Subject to these terms, ScanWrench gives you a limited, personal, revocable, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to use the app and website for their intended lawful purpose. ScanWrench's software, design, brand, original educational material, and compiled service data are protected by applicable intellectual-property law. You may not copy, resell, scrape at disruptive scale, reverse engineer except where law expressly permits, remove notices, or use ScanWrench branding to imply affiliation.
Availability, changes, suspension, and ending use
We may add, change, suspend, or retire features to address safety, security, law, platform requirements, vendor changes, technical limits, or product operation. We may limit or suspend access when reasonably necessary to investigate misuse, protect users or systems, comply with law, or enforce these terms. You may stop using the service at any time and may delete an eligible cloud account in the app. Sections that by their nature should survive—such as ownership, submitted-content licenses already needed for retained records, disclaimers, and liability limits—continue after use ends.
Disclaimers
To the maximum extent permitted by law, ScanWrench is provided “as is” and “as available.” We do not warrant uninterrupted availability, universal compatibility, complete vehicle coverage, diagnostic accuracy, marketplace fitment, a particular repair outcome, or that every error will be corrected. Some jurisdictions do not allow certain warranty exclusions, so those exclusions may not apply to you.
Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, ScanWrench and its operator will not be liable for indirect, incidental, special, exemplary, punitive, or consequential loss, lost profits or data, loss of vehicle use, or damage arising from an unsafe procedure, incorrect third-party data, incompatible hardware, or a decision made from incomplete evidence. Nothing in these terms excludes liability or a consumer remedy that applicable law does not allow us to exclude.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms when the product or law changes. The effective date above identifies the current version. If a change materially affects existing paid access or legal rights, we will provide notice through a reasonable available channel before the change takes effect when required.
