The 16-pin connector spans multiple generations
Earlier OBD-II vehicles can use ISO 9141-2, ISO 14230 KWP2000, SAE J1850 PWM, or SAE J1850 VPW. Supporting modern CAN does not establish support for those buses, voltage levels, timing rules, or initialization sequences.
The adapter must contain the required electronics
Software cannot create a K-Line or J1850 transceiver inside hardware that lacks one. A truthful adapter profile records the physical interfaces, command behavior, firmware limitations, and any initialization modes that were actually exercised.

Legacy failure should remain specific
No response can mean unsupported electronics, a wiring or power issue, wrong initialization, a vehicle state problem, or no responding ECU. The interface should retain that stage instead of collapsing every failure into vehicle not supported.
