FIELD-READY EVIDENCE

Preserve the story
before it changes.

Six practical checklists for the moments when a missed condition, cleared code, wrong adapter, wrong part, or incomplete verification gets expensive.

01

First scan and warning-light capture

Before clearing codes, disconnecting power, or replacing a part.

  1. Screen for unsafe operation, heat, smoke, fuel odor, fluid loss, severe vibration, brake/steering/restraint warnings, or high-voltage damage.
  2. Record the exact complaint, warning behavior, date/time, mileage, weather, temperature, fuel/charge level, and recent work.
  3. Record adapter, firmware, phone/platform, app build, protocol, and connected controllers.
  4. Save stored, pending, and permanent codes with status and reporting module.
  5. Save readiness, freeze frame, Mode $06 availability, and relevant live-data baseline.
  6. Mark unavailable modules and signals as unavailable—not clear or zero.
  7. Export or photograph the evidence before any reset.

Intermittent-event log

Each time a fault appears and disappears.

  1. Key state, start/drive time, cold or hot soak, rain/wash exposure, road surface, turn, braking, acceleration, accessories, and charging state.
  2. Exact warning messages, sounds, odors, vibration, control changes, duration, and what restored operation.
  3. Current, pending, history, low-voltage, and communication codes across every accessible module.
  4. A focused hands-free trace of signals that separate the leading hypotheses.
  5. Physical inspection notes before moving connectors or harnesses.
  6. Event-to-event comparison and any contradicting evidence.

Used-car evidence review

With the owner’s permission before purchase.

  1. Physical VIN, documents, title/history source, recalls, service records, and cold-start availability.
  2. Warning-lamp bulb check and all available module scans before the road test.
  3. Stored, pending, permanent, readiness, freeze-frame, voltage, and reported-VIN evidence.
  4. Independent inspection of structure, leaks, tires, brakes, steering, suspension, cooling, fluids, corrosion, and prior repairs.
  5. Road-test observations and a permitted post-drive rescan.
  6. Hybrid/EV, exotic, or high-value specialist review using exact application access.
  7. Written list of inaccessible systems and unresolved questions.

Adapter and capability fit

Before spending money on diagnostic hardware.

  1. Exact phone/Windows platform and supported transport: BLE, Wi-Fi, approved Classic path, USB, Ethernet, J2534, or other VCI driver.
  2. Exact hardware model, revision, firmware, driver, cable, and electrical requirements.
  3. Exact vehicle application, protocol, module, and read or command function needed.
  4. Required profile, licensed definition, OEM subscription, secure-gateway account, or provider authority.
  5. Independent support evidence for the exact configuration—not a brand-wide badge.
  6. Return policy, firmware support, vendor identity, and counterfeit risk.

Exact part identity and offer comparison

After diagnosis establishes the repair basis.

  1. Exact vehicle application, production date, engine/transmission/drivetrain, market, and relevant option codes.
  2. Trusted catalog anchor with brand, manufacturer part number, position, qualifiers, and exclusions.
  3. Marketplace listing matches exact brand and printed manufacturer part number.
  4. Condition, quantity, actual photos, seller record, returns, warranty, shipping, tax, core, and delivery reviewed.
  5. Dealer/local and online delivered-total comparisons use the same identity.
  6. Final listing and policy rechecked immediately before purchase.

Repair verification and handoff

Before closing the job or accepting the vehicle back.

  1. Original complaint and pre-repair evidence attached.
  2. Exact repair, part numbers, software/calibration identifiers, fluids, setup, coding, registration, or relearn documented.
  3. Original failure conditions repeated safely with comparable signals.
  4. Current and pending channels remain clear of the target fault under the test window.
  5. Relevant readiness monitor and permanent-code state recorded.
  6. No new related code, warning, leak, noise, or control issue introduced.
  7. Unavailable tests, incomplete monitors, deferred work, observation window, and safety restrictions disclosed.
