Identify the exact indicator before scanning
VSC means Vehicle Stability Control on Toyota and Lexus vehicles, while other manufacturers use names such as ESC or stability control. The exact dashboard symbol and message matter more than the nickname: a VSC OFF indicator, a slip indicator flashing while the system operates, and a steady malfunction warning are different states.
Check the owner's manual for the exact year and model while safely parked. On Toyota examples, the VSC OFF indicator shows that the driver turned stability or traction functions off, the slip indicator can flash during normal intervention, and a warning that remains on can indicate a malfunction. Do not generalize one Toyota manual to every Toyota, Lexus, or other vehicle.
Also note whether the check-engine light is steady or flashing. EPA owner guidance treats a flashing malfunction indicator light as a possible catalyst-damaging misfire that needs prompt attention with speed and load minimized. Rough running, severe power loss, a red brake warning, changed braking or steering, smoke, or overheating calls for stopping safely and following the vehicle's emergency guidance.
What two lights prove—and what they do not
The observed fact is narrow: the vehicle displayed an emissions or powertrain warning and a stability-related status or warning at the same time. That is useful timing evidence. It does not prove that the engine fault caused the VSC warning, that the VSC controller caused the engine light, or that both lights share one failed part.
One condition may be associated with both reported states on a particular vehicle, or the vehicle may have two separate conditions. A wheel-speed, steering-angle, brake, voltage, communication, engine, or controller path could become relevant only after the exact records point there. Those are investigation branches, not diagnoses from the dashboard alone.
Do not test stability control with a hard stop or abrupt steering maneuver on a public road. A warning-light combination cannot establish remaining traction or stability assistance, roadworthiness, or safe stopping performance.

Read the engine and stability systems separately
Standardized OBD-II focuses on emissions-related monitoring and powertrain evidence behind the malfunction indicator light. A regular scan may return useful P-codes, pending or permanent status, readiness, and freeze-frame data. It does not automatically contact the controller responsible for VSC, ESC, traction control, or the skid-control functions on that vehicle.
Only call the stability system checked when a compatible tool completed a read from the exact manufacturer-controlled module and preserved the module identity, named operation, profile, adapter, and time. The dashboard term may not match the scan tool's module label, so the exact service information controls the target.
A successful engine scan cannot inherit upward into VSC coverage. Likewise, an exact stability-module read that returns no codes means only that no fault codes were returned by that completed module read. It is not a stability test, brake inspection, or safety certificate.
Preserve the evidence before it changes
Photograph the exact lights and messages while safely parked. Record whether each was steady or flashing, the mileage, when they appeared, how the vehicle felt, weather and road conditions, and recent battery, tire, alignment, brake, wheel-bearing, engine, or throttle work.
Capture the emissions codes, code status, readiness, and available freeze frame before anyone clears controller memory or disconnects the battery. Clearing can remove useful context and reset readiness without repairing either condition.
If an enhanced stability-control read is unsupported, gateway-locked, incomplete, or failed, preserve that status. No response is not no problem, and a generic powertrain result must not be relabeled as VSC, ABS, or full-system coverage.
Use the first test that separates the branches
Start with current information for the exact VIN, market, model year, powertrain, and warning symbols. Then compare the time and status of the powertrain record with the exact stability-control module record. A qualified repairer may also need battery-voltage evidence, network checks, wheel and tire inspection, sensor data, wiring tests, or manufacturer procedures.
Check the VIN in NHTSA's recall database as a separate step. An open recall can identify an official remedy, but it does not diagnose the two lights on the vehicle in front of you.
After any repair, repeat the same supported reads and the manufacturer-defined verification. Do not use a clear command merely to turn the indicators off, and do not replace the first part named by a generic code description without the proving test.
Can a check-engine fault turn on the VSC light?
The two states may be related on a particular vehicle, but the lights do not prove that relationship or name the cause. Preserve the powertrain record and read the exact stability-control module before assigning one cause.
Is it safe to drive with the VSC and check-engine lights on?
There is no universal safe-driving answer. A flashing check-engine light, rough running, major power loss, a red brake warning, changed braking or steering, smoke, or overheating calls for stopping safely and following the owner's manual. Otherwise, use the exact manual and arrange prompt diagnosis rather than testing stability control on the road.
Will a regular OBD-II scanner read VSC codes?
Not necessarily. Generic OBD-II is standardized around emissions and powertrain evidence. VSC or stability-control faults normally require exact manufacturer-enhanced access to the responsible module for that vehicle, adapter, transport, and software profile.
Can I reset both lights by clearing the engine code?
Do not use clearing as a diagnosis or repair. It changes evidence and readiness, may temporarily change indicator behavior, and does not prove either condition is fixed. Capture both systems first, follow the exact procedure, and verify the repair under the same conditions.
